On July 4, 1973, the week Slade's "Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me" single debuted at #1, drummer Don Powell's Bentley crashed through a hedge and against a tree and brick wall. Both Powell and his 20 year old fiancee, Angela Morris, were thrown from the vehicle. Morris died. Powell was badly injured. Surgeons drilled a hole in his skull to relieve pressure on his brain. Many thought he would die. Instead Powell, with cane in hand, returned to the studio just six weeks later where Slade recorded the future #2 UK hit "My Friend Stan".
To this day Powell has memory problems. Nobody knows who was driving the car. Powell has also lost both his sense of smell and taste.
