Audiophile Brad Miller's Mystic Moods Orchestra offered up an unexpected slice of funk on the 1973 album Awakening, heralded by Billboard Magazine as "an evolutionary new experience". The single "Cosmic Sea" is a spacey three minutes of narration, funky and sound effects. Background listening? Hell no. This is foreground listening. By May of 1973, the single had climbed into the 80's in the Billboard 100 and #24 in the Easy Listening charts.
Following the unexpected chart success of "Cosmic Sea", Brad Miller and the Mystic Moods Orchestra continued to record albums for major labels, each one featuring covers more soft core than the one preceding.
